Should Christians Support the President?

Should Christians Support President Trump?

Romans 13:1 reads, “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God” (NASB).

According to the Bible, God chose Donald Trump to be America’s president. If we accept this truth, we must also consent to Trump’s presidency as God’s will. Therefore, Christians that do not support the president are rejecting the will of God.

Some Christians do not want to support the presidency of Donald Trump because they believe it violates their moral principles. I believe we can support Donald Trump without violating our moral principles. How can Christians support Donald Trump as president?

First, we can respect him.

1 Peters 2:13 reads, “Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority.”

The world is watching our response to the leadership of President Trump. They take note of our attitudes and actions. Peter urges us to respect those in human authority for the Lord’s sake. We may dislike the president’s personality and policies, but we should respect him because God’s word (the Bible) commands us to respect him.

Second, we can pray for him.

1 Timothy 2:1-3 reads, “First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior.”

We should pray for the president. Pray for his relationship with God. Pray for his family. Pray for his leadership. Instead of protesting him, which is protesting the will of God as well, we should pray for him. Pray for President Trump so we may experience peace in America. Praying for the president also pleases God.

As Christians, we are biblically obligated to support the president by respecting him and praying for him. Will you support the president?

  1. I support the President by praying he gains some of the maturity he needs, so that we (as a nation) may solve more of our problems. It comes under the umbrella of hating sin while still loving the sinner though. We are quite free to disagree, protest and oppose when the President takes unwise or harmful actions toward others who are less privileged, or seeks to punish those who didn’t vote for him. There’s also a wide latitude in praying for him. For example, I sincerely pray he is able to return to his former profession, and the old life he says he misses, sooner rather than later. But as in all else, I accept God’s timeline.

    • I agree, we have a wide latitude in praying for him. Jeremiah 29:7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” (NIV).

      Let’s pray for his wisdom!
